The 2022 Ford Ranger has incited a lot of excitement among car enthusiasts, as an impressive, mid-size pickup truck. But, one of its main competitors is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma, a terrific vehicle for daily driving and off-roading.

The Toyota Tacoma might have less refined driving manners and manual transmission, its engine power, and flexible suspension give you a reliable vehicle. It is packed with driver assistance technology and a tough exterior that can handle the roughest terrains.

On the other hand, the 2022 Ford Ranger comes with the perfect size for work duties but is also fitted with off-road add-ons that make it fantastic when driving on rough terrains. Ford has added new color options and a different interior design to keep drivers impressed.

Similarities

Fuel Economy

With four-wheel drive, the 2022 Ford Ranger gives you a pretty decent fuel economy of 20, 24, and 22 mpg for city, highway, and combined, respectively. The rear-wheel drive offers 21, 26, and 23 mpg. You won’t have to spend a lot of money on fuel with the Ranger.

As for the 2022 Toyota Tacoma, it offers average fuel economy, in a similar range with the Ford Ranger. It is set at 20, 23, and 21 mpg for city, highway, and combined, respectively.

If you’re worried about saving fuel, you can go for either of these two vehicles.

Warranty

Toyota has great warranty coverage to offer, with complimentary maintenance stretching for two years or 25,000 miles. The limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles while the powertrain warranty is for five years or 60,000 miles.

Unlike the Toyota Tacoma, the Ford Ranger does not have complimentary maintenance. But, the limited and powertrain warranties are the same.

Differences

Engine Power

The first and main difference between the 2022 Toyota Tacoma and the 2022 Ford Ranger is the engine power. Both cars function seamlessly on and off-road, and this is due to their engine power.

The 2022 Ford Ranger is powered by a 2.3-liter turbo-4 engine combined with a 10-speed automatic and part-time four-wheel drive. It also features a rear-drive and offers 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque.

The on-road handling of this pickup truck is similar to driving a full-size truck, as it is fitted with a solid rear axle, independent front suspension, and ladder frame. It gives you a bouncy ride, which you can learn to handle over time.

As for the 2022 Toyota Tacoma, it features a four-cylinder V-6 engine under the hood. It gives off the same 270 horsepower and is combined with a six-speed automatic or manual transmission depending on what you choose. The vehicle works more seamlessly with the manual transmission, so you can start driving on rougher paths.

Although the Tacoma isn’t your first choice if you need a vehicle that provides a good ride and handling experience, it tackles the off-roads with ease. It can be customized too to take on the rough roads.

Towing Capacity

One important part of any pickup truck is the towing capacity, and this is a big difference between the 2022 Toyota Tacoma and the 2022 Ford Ranger.

The 2022 Tacoma can tow up to 6800 pounds or 6500 pounds on the rear- and four-wheel drive versions. You get better-towing capacity with the 2022 Ranger, which is set at 7500 pounds.

Infotainment and Technology

As for the infotainment systems, the 2022 Tacoma and Ranger clash in a few sections but are still different from each other.

Toyota did a great job with the Tacoma series by adding a touchscreen infotainment system in each vehicle. The base trim was fitted with a 7.0-inch display while other models had a screen 1.0-inch bigger. It is also fitted with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless charging, USB ports, and more, but no mobile hotspot is available.

As for the security technology, the 2022 Toyota Tacoma is fitted with all the necessary driver assistance technology despite its average crash test scores. It also offers standard features like lane departure warning, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and automated emergency braking.

The 2022 Ford Ranger on the other hand is fitted with multiple standard and optional infotainment features. These include USB ports, a 4.2-inch audio display, power mirrors, Bluetooth, cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and more. Some trims have an 8.0-inch touchscreen, keyless start, and other powerful features.

In terms of safety, the Ranger also has average scoring in its crash tests and different standard features like automatic emergency braking on every model. Some models also offer blind-spot monitors and other features you have to pay extra for.

Price

Although the 2022 Tacoma has three more trims than the 2022 Rangers’ five trim lines, the price ranges are quite similar.

The Ford Ranger offers its trims between estimated prices of $26,580 and $41,000. As for the Toyota Tacoma, it goes from $28,000 to $46,000.

The 2022 Tacoma is more expensive than the Ranger, but whichever you choose depends on your on and off-road needs.

Verdict

Although the 2022 Ford Ranger and 2022 Toyota Tacoma are similar in terms of their gas mileage and warranty coverages, the pickup trucks have proven to serve different kinds of drivers.

If you’re looking for a mid-size pickup truck with fantastic driving manners, plenty of drive assistant features, a powerful turbo engine, and stout towing capacity, the 2022 Ford Ranger is a great choice.

On the other hand, the 2022 Toyota Tacoma offers fantastic off-road fittings and features, is reliable and durable, plus, can be easily customized for each driver.
