The 2022 Toyota Tacoma has soon earned its off-road credibility with an incredible engine and flexible suspension. But, this popular vehicle is often contrasted with the 2022 Toyota Tundra, boasting refined powertrains and an impressive interior design.

As the 2022 Tacoma and Tundra are from Toyota, it’s not surprising that there are some similarities between them. But, these pickup trucks are completely different series, so the one you choose depends on your driving needs.

In this guide, we would compare the 2022 Tundra with Tacoma extensively.

Similarities

Warranty

Since the 2022 Tacoma and Tundra are both from Toyota, it’s not surprising that they have the same warranty and maintenance coverage.

The complimentary maintenance is the same, covering two years or 25,000 miles. Then, the limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles while the powertrain warranty is set at five years or 60,000 miles.

Differences

Engine Power

The similarities in engine power for the 2022 Toyota Tacoma and Tundra end with the V-6 engine.

The 2022 Tundra is powered by a twin-turbo V-6 engine, although there is a hybrid system available that offers an incredible 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. The standard V-6 engine is accompanied by a 10-speed automatic transmission and offers 348 horsepower and 405 lb-ft. of torque with the base trim. Higher trims make 389hp and 479 lb-ft.

The Tundra 2022 MY also surpasses its predecessors by using a more advanced coil-spring rear suspension. You can increase the off-road capabilities by purchasing specific packages offered by Toyota.

As for the 2022 Toyota Tacoma, it offers a six-speed automatic transmission with a four-cylinder V-6 engine. It is the only mid-size pickup that also offers a manual transmission, also six speed. The engine delivers 270 horsepower with decent performance.

The engine struggle sometimes when paired with the automatic transmission, so the manual option is highly recommended. Although the 2022 Tacoma isn’t the top choice if you want to enjoy handling and ride qualities, it can get through the roughest terrains with ease. It can also be customized for special off-roads like pavement cruising and dirt-treading.

Fuel Economy

The 2022 Toyota Tacoma falls short of its competitors in terms of fuel economy ratings. The EPA is set at 20 mpg and 23 mpg for city and highway respectively. The combined ratings are 21 mpg.

As for the 2022 Tundra, the twin-turbo V-6 engine and hybrid alternative offer a good opportunity for fuel-efficiency. But, the ratings are similar to the Tacoma, so it also falls behind the competition. It is set at 18 mpg, 24 mpg, and 20 mpg for city, highway, and combined.

Towing Capacity

If you’re planning to tow a lot of heavy stuff, you would do better with the 2022 Toyota Tundra than the Tacoma. The Tundra can tow up to 12,000 pounds and has a maximum payload capacity of 1940 pounds. Although this is less than other full-size pickup trucks, it is way better than the Tacoma.

That’s because the 2022 Tacoma has a towing capacity of 6800 pounds or 6500 pounds, for rear-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive versions. Its maximum payload capacity is also lower, which is 1685 pounds, only on the two-wheel drive models.

Infotainment and Technology

The 2022 Toyota Tundra and Tacoma are a bit similar in terms of their infotainment system, but the former has a better upgraded option than the former.

The Tundra has a 8.0-inch touchscreen for standard, while the upgraded option is an horizontally oriented 14.0-inch touchscreen. Asides this, there aren’t a lot of tech features available. There is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot. It is also fitted with a volume knob, but there is no tuning knob and not a lot of functions on the steering wheel either.

As for safety technology, the 2022 Toyota Tundra is stocked with a plethora of safety and driver assistance features. These include automatic high beams, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, automated emergency braking and lane-keeping assist.

On the other hand, the 2022 Tacoma offered a 7.0-inch inch display on the base model, while the higher trims have an 8.0-inch touchscreen. While it also offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, it has no hotspot available. It is also fitted with wireless charging and multiple USB ports.

In terms of safety technology, the 2022 Tacoma is quite similar to the Tundra. It also features the standard driver assistance technology.

Price

The 2022 Tacoma is more affordable than the Tundra, so if you’re picking based on your budget, you can go for the former.

The 2022 Toyota Tacoma features eight trim lines, which is between estimated prices of $28,000 and $46,000.

As for the 2022 Toyota Tundra, there are six trims with prices from $37,645 and $59,385.

Verdict

While the 2022 Toyota Tacoma and 2022 Toyota Tundra are both great pickup trucks on their own, it might be a bit difficult to select just one. Thus, you need to examine both trims and decide the one that would work best for you.

The 2022 Toyota Tacoma is a fantastic workhorse that would function very well off-road, and although it is a bit primitive compared to its competitors, it offers great value for its money. It is easy to customize, highly durable, and comes with many standard tech features.

As for the 2022 Toyota Tundra, it is much better than its predecessors with bold interior and exterior designs, a modern engine, and technology features. The highlights are the rear suspension, top engine power, and high towing capacity.
